Periodontitis is caused by pathogenic microorganisms in the mouth that accumulate in plaque and cause gingivitis. Untreated gingivitis progresses to periodontitis. If the plaque buildup is not removed, gingivitis progresses to periodontitis, which results in the loss of periodontal ligaments and alveolar bone.
Traditionally, periodontitis treatment involves mechanical removal of plaque (supragingival and subgingival) and education of the patient on oral hygiene. This only temporarily reduces the bacterial load in the mouth, as pathogenic bacteria quickly recolonize the oral cavity.
New scientific insights into the importance of maintaining a balance of oral microflora are a compelling reason to supplement traditional periodontitis treatment methods with naturally occurring bacteria that exhibit antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory effects.
BioGaia ProDentis is a special medical food supplement intended for the control of inflammatory periodontal diseases.
